Myofascial cupping is a soft tissue therapy that involves the application of decompressed cups on the skin that creates a vacuum effect.

The cups lift underlying tissues such as the fascia (connective tissue) and muscles, blood, and other fluid, close to the surface of the skin. Myofascial cupping is another way to reduce aches and pains and tight muscles, and increase range of movement. This type of treatment can be done anywhere on the body to lengthen and benefit the muscles.

How Do We Use Myofascial Cupping?

Sport massage works in hand with the cups, complementing each other. Massaging the muscular restricted area and tension and then applying a cup will give the muscle that little bit extra to eliminate those adhesions or trigger points. Myofascial cupping techniques are used by applying the cups in the restricted area and moving then up and down the muscle line. This will allow the cup to lengthen the muscle and reduce tension. The cups can also be left on an area that needs to be trigger pointed for a short amount of time to eliminate the trigger point.

How Do the Cups Work?

Myofascial cupping works by creating suction between the body and the cup to produce negative pressure. This causes dilatation and capillary rupture. The capillary rupture is what causes the red circles on the client’s skin. This helps neural pathways, promotes blood circulation, relieves stress and increases tissue temperature.

The lymphatic system loves myofascial cupping. The cups help draw toxins out of the muscles fibres by increasing blood flow towards the region. The cups reduce tension, pain and tenderness in the affected muscles. Movement is also benefitted as the cups help to get rid of the adhesions that are haltering range of movement.

The Benefits of Myofascial Cupping

There are so many benefits of myofascial cupping. For example, the cups separate layers of connective tissue to bring hydration and blood flow to the affected area. They encourage the movement of stagnations, lactic acid, and metabolic waste, enabling normal lymphatic flow and healthy circulation that helps strengthen the immune system.

Helping circulation can also relieve cramp, reduce swelling, aid faster healing of wounds, keeps the brain sharp and helps with complexion. The cups also increase the temperature of muscle tissue which helps the elasticity of muscle tissue around areas of tension. Increasing elasticity allows a muscle to relax and lengthen.
