Crossing the finish line of a marathon is a moment like no other. Months of training, early mornings and sheer determination all come down to that final stretch. And when you finally collect your medal, there’s an incredible sense of relief, pride and exhaustion all rolled into one.
But what happens when adrenaline fades and the real fatigue sets in? The hours and days immediately following a marathon are when your body does its most important work – repairing, replenishing and restoring. How you spend those first 72 hours can make all the difference to how quickly (and comfortably) you recover.
We’ve got some tips on how to give your body and mind the best possible start on the road back to feeling great.
What happens to your body after a marathon?
Running 26.2 miles is no small feat. In fact, it’s one of the most demanding physical challenges you can take on. Once you’ve crossed the line, your body starts a full-scale recovery operation:
Muscles develop micro-tears that need repair – which is why that deep, aching feeling known as DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness) often kicks in within 24 – 48 hours.
Inflammation increases as tissues respond to the stress of the race.
Energy stores (particularly glycogen) are depleted, leaving you feeling drained and heavy-legged.
On top of the physical side, there’s a hormonal shift too. During the race, your body is fuelled by cortisol and adrenaline – the hormones that help you dig deep and keep going. Once those levels drop, it’s common to feel emotionally flat or even a bit teary. That post-race dip is completely normal; it’s your body’s way of recalibrating after a massive effort.
Top recovery strategies
1. Book a sports massage
A professional sports massage within 24-48 hours can work wonders. It improves circulation, helps clear out waste products and eases tight, fatigued muscles before they become problem areas. Massage also encourages better tissue alignment, reducing the risk of future injury.
And beyond the physical benefits, there’s something wonderfully healing about the reassurance that comes from an experienced therapist saying ‘you’re going to be fine.’ It’s as much about the mental reset as it is about your muscle recover.
2. Gentle stretching and light walking
After weeks of training, it’s tempting to collapse on the sofa and not move for days but a bit of gentle activity will actually help you recover faster. Light stretching and easy walking promote blood flow, reduce stiffness and encourage your body to flush out the by-products of intense exercise.
It’s like active recovery rather than punishment. Listen to your body and keep it gentle, the goal is movement, not mileage.
3. Soak with Epsom salts
A bath with salts is a wonderful thing but it’s also fantastic therapy for your post-race body. The magnesium in the salts helps ease muscle soreness, calm inflammation and support your recovery while the heat encourages your tissues to relax. Add in some quiet music or a good podcast and you’ll be winning at the after-marathon wind down.
4. Rehydrate, refuel and rest
Marathons deplete almost everything in the body – fluids, electrolytes, glycogen and energy reserves. Start replenishing slowly:
Rehydrate with water and electrolyte drinks.
Refuel with nourishing meals that balance carbohydrates and protein.
Rest because your body does its deepest healing when you’re asleep.
Give yourself permission to do less for a bit, you’ve earned it.
5. Don’t forget mental recovery
Once race day is over, it’s normal to feel a little lost. Training gives you structure, focus and purpose so when that suddenly stops, post-marathon blues are really common.
Be kind to yourself. Celebrate your achievement, connect with fellow runners who understand what you’re feeling and remember that the emotional low doesn’t undo the incredible thing you’ve just done. It’s simply a part of the process.
Recovery is as essential as training
Finishing a marathon is an amazing achievement but how you recover matters just as much as how you trained. Priorities gentle movement, rest, balanced nutrition and supportive treatments like sports massage to give your body the best possible chance to bounce back.
