If you spend most of your working day at a desk, you’re in good company. Roughly 8 out of 10 UK office workers sit for between four and nine hours every single day. It might be part and parcel of modern working life but our bodies simply weren’t designed for that much stillness.

You may already be noticing the signs: a stiff neck that sneaks in around lunchtime, tight hips that make it harder to get up from your chair or that hideous mid-afternoon slump. These little niggles are your body’s way of saying: move me!

A few minutes of stretching in the morning can really help get things back on the right track. Before you even open your inbox, you can set your body up for a better day – easing stiffness, boosting energy and giving your posture a fighting chance against the desk hours ahead.

Why morning stretches matter

Starting your day with gentle movement doesn’t mean rolling out a full yoga mat and squeezing in a sweaty workout before 9 am. It’s more like giving your body the wake-up call it’s been waiting for. Stretching improves blood flow, warms up the muscles and frees up the joints, all before you sit down at your desk.

Even better, it sets the tone for the rest of your day. Rather than slipping straight into ‘work mode’ hunched over a keyboard, you’re giving your body a chance to reset and move in the way it was designed to.

Stretching: a natural instinct we’ve lost

If you’re thinking ‘I just don’t have time to stretch in the morning’, we hear you. But your body is wired to do it. We can take inspiration from our pets – what’s the very first thing your dog or cat does when it wakes up? Big stretch, every single time.

It’s instinctive and somewhere along the way we’ve simply fallen out of the habit. By bringing back even a couple of minutes of gentle stretching, you’re giving your body something it’s been craving all along.

The benefits of morning movement

It doesn’t take long to feel the difference. Just a short routine can:

Ease stiffness that builds up overnight
Put your posture in a better place before the workday begins
Boost energy and focus
Stop everyday aches from becoming long-term pain.

Like brushing your teeth, it’s a little act of daily maintenance. Small consistent stretches now can save you from bigger issues later.

Quick, fuss-free stretches to try

No fancy equipment needed – you don’t even need to change out of your pyjamas. Here are a few simple stretches you can build into your morning:

Bed stretches (before you fling off the duvet):

Knee rolls/leg sways: Lie on your back, knees bent. Gently sway them side to side to release the lower back and hips.
Ankle circles: Flex, point and roll your ankles. Great if you get stiff calves or tight feet.

Standing stretches (yes, pre-scroll!):

Side reach: Stand with feet hip-width apart. Reach one arm overhead and lean gently to the opposite side. Lovely for the ribs and waist.
Forward fold: With a soft bend in the knees, fold forward from the hips, letting your arms hang heavy. This decompresses the spine and loosens hamstrings.
Neck mobility: Drop one ear toward your shoulder, then the other. Slowly look left and right. Keep it gentle, no forcing.

Feeling energised? Try a few simple sun salutations:

These combine breath and movement while waking up the whole body. They’re beginner-friendly (a quick search will show you easy versions) and brilliant for shaking off stiffness before sitting down to work.

It’s not your age – it’s your movement

One thing we hear often in clinic is ‘it’s just my age.’ But most of the time, stiffness and creaks aren’t about getting older. They’re about lack of movement. Your body thrives on regular activity, even in small doses. So rather than writing off those niggles as an inevitable part of office life, try introducing a few stretches into your mornings and notice how different you feel.

Stay small, start consistent

If the idea of a morning routine sounds overwhelming, don’t worry – it doesn’t need to be long or complicated. Pick three or four stretches that feel good and commit to doing them most mornings. That’s it.

One tip that really works? Habit stacking. Pair your stretches with something you already do every day. While the kettle boils, after brushing your teeth or just before you grab your morning coffee – those tiny windows are perfect for slipping in some movement.

And don’t forget that perfection isn’t the goal. It doesn’t need to look polished or ‘Instagram-worthy’. The only goal is to move a little more, more often.
